CASTER NUT TIGHTENING STATION
CHALLENGE:
A manufacturer of swivel casters was having a problem with its final assembly process. The swivel resistance of each caster was set through the tightening of a kingpin nut, but simply controlling the torque of the nut did not achieve consistent results with the swivel resistance itself.
The company manufactured a number of different swivel caster models, and was having this issue across the board.

SOLUTION:
Rather than holding the caster base and rotating the nut, this custom-designed machine holds the nut with a stationary socket while the base is rotated with a servo gearmotor. An adjustable spring-loaded sensing arm holds the horn of the caster in place while the base rotates.
Once the desired swivel resistance is achieved, the horn overcomes the spring on the sensing arm and tightening is stopped. To accomodate multiple caster models, the initial position of the sensing arm, as well as the resistance, is adjustable, and multiple caster base nests provide quick changeover.
